Winning the Cup!
The BARLA Cup Final is the top competition in the amateur Rugby League game and takes in all the clubs from the Conference League and also some of the top clubs from the Regional Leagues. Sharlston Rovers who the branch sponsor made it to the final after beating competition from the Conference League, including Hull Dockers who made the Premiership Playoffs, and Queens and Drighlington the top teams in the Pennine League. Their opponents in the final were neighbours Fryston.
At 18-16 to Fryston with literally seconds to go it looked all over. Two chances to kick at goal were turned down in the last minutes to run the ball. A ball out to the wing saw Gareth Davies power over in the corner. The kick was missed and then the final whistle blew. The try was scored with seven seconds to go 20-18 to Sharlston. The rest as they say is history...
Golf update
We had two Golf Tournaments last year, one at Cleethorpes which was well attended and one at Boothferry which was no so well attended. This year we have gone back to having just one tournament. Availability and cost comes into consideration when booking the course.
After searching around and trying to fit in a suitable date, this year’s Golf Competition will be at Beverley. This is a course we have not played at during the many years the competition has been ongoing. However they seem an accommodating lot so we are giving it a go.
Because of the deal that they have offered us we have kept the price down to £15 per person and will be playing in teams of four. The rules will be on the application form because to be honest I still haven’t a clue after all these years. The first tee-off time is 1pm and the usual bacon sarnie and coffee will be available. This will be followed by a meal and presentations in the club house or 19th hole as it is sometimes called.
Please note it is essential that this tournament is well supported and attended so we can justify the competition continuing in the future.
Individuals are welcome, you don`t have to come as a ready-made team as we can fit you in. Application forms can be obtained by contacting the Office on 01924 305360. Places are limited and on a first come first served basis.
UNISON supports football in Wakefield
Our sponsorship of the youth teams at Wakefield FC is now established. It is a sponsorship we are keen on developing, as it will encourage home grown talent to come up through the structure of the club. The club are giving UNISON members access to all first team games at the concessionary rate of £5 and are also offering 10% off all Wakefield FC merchandise. To qualify for either offer proof of membership will be needed (either a wage slip or membership card). The club gave free admission to all Wakefield MD UNISON members for the game against Ossett Albion on New Year’s Day, the game ended in a 1-1 draw. The club may make similar offers to members in future, so keep an eye on your notice board or the Branch website www.wakefield-unison.org.uk
